Already, many data sets have been published as such and are available in the Linked Open Data cloud. With it, the nature of these data has shifted from unstructured to structured. This presents new opportunities for data mining. In this work, we investigate to what extend data mining can contribute to the understanding of archaeological knowledge, expressed as knowledge graph, and which form would best meet the communities' needs. A case study was held which involved the user-driven mining of generalized association rules. Experiments have shown that the approach yielded mostly plausible patterns, some of which were seen as highly relevant by domain experts.

Popular examples are DBpedia and GeoNames. The formal system underlying these KGs provides inherent support for deductive reasoning. Growing popularity has exposed several limitations of thisability, amongst which are scalability and uncertainty issues, as well ascoping with heterogeneous, noisy, and inconsistent data. By supplementing this form of reasoning with Machine Learning algorithms, these hurdles are much more easily overcome. Of the existing research in this area, only a handful have been considering a Deep Neural Network. Moreover, only one of these studies has addressed the problem of hyper-parameteroptimization, albeit under specific conditions. To contribute to this areaof research, we propose a research design that will investigate a DeepNeural Network with optimized hyper-parameters for its effectiveness toperform link prediction on real-world KGs.

The integration of field survey data from Eastern Sicily (the Plain of Catania) with legacy data available for the region will expand our knowledge on Mediterranean ancient rural landscapes. With an extent of 430 km2, the area is a perfect case study due to its geographical characteristics and the number of archaeological projects (both excavations and surveys) carried out within it in recent decades. Indeed, combining archaeological data from earlier research projects with new survey data allows us to conduct a settlement pattern analysis of the project’s study area. Heterogenous datasets have been integrated through their implementation into a geo-database, featuring the management and integration of topographical units and archaeological entities through semantic relations. Through geospatial data analysis based on the complete gazetteer of archaeological sites (whether sherd scatters, ruins, caves dwellings, tombs or tracks), a new image of rural landscapes for this area of Eastern Sicily from the Greek Archaic to the Late Roman Age can be visualized, beyond the traditional Sicilia frumentaria narrative.

Wilcke; V. de Boer; M.T.M. de Kleijn; F.A.H. van Harmelen; Henk J. Scholten;Abstract In recent years, there has been a growing interest from the digital humanities in knowledge graphs as data modelling paradigm. Already, this has led to the creation of many such knowledge graphs, many of which are now available as part of the Linked Open Data cloud. This presents new opportunities for data mining. In this work, we develop, implement, and evaluate (both data-driven and user-driven) an end-to-end pipeline for user-centric pattern mining on knowledge graphs in the humanities. This pipeline combines constrained generalized association rule mining with natural language output and facet rule browsing to allow for transparency and interpretability—two key domain requirements. Experiments in the archaeological domain show that domain experts were positively surprised by the range of patterns that were discovered and were overall optimistic about the future potential of this approach.

These are large areas containing objects with heterogeneous shapes and semantic information. The study proposes that DEAs should be modular, have multi-tier architectures, and be developed as Free and Open Source Software if possible. In DEAs requiring high reliability in the 3D measurements, point clouds are proposed as basis for the 3D Digital digital earth representation. For the development of DEAs, we propose to follow a workflow with four components: data acquisition and processing, data management, data analysis and data visualization. For every component, technological challenges of using 3D technologies are identified and solutions applied for a case study are presented. The case study is a modular 3D DEA developed for the archaeological project Mapping the Via Appia. The 3D DEA allows archaeologists to virtually analyze a complex study area.
